How much does household storage cost in India? (2026 guide)

Storage pricing in India is confusing because different providers charge for different things — square feet, cubic feet, per item or per “unit”. This guide explains what you actually pay for, what typical homes cost per month, and how to keep the bill down.

The three charges in every storage bill

Almost every storage provider bills three things: a monthly storage charge, a one-time collection/packing charge, and a delivery charge when you want items back. Some hide the second and third inside a higher monthly rate; StorageWale lists all three on the quote.

• Monthly storage — the item-based providers (StorageWale among them) price each item per month; self-storage rents a fixed unit whether you fill it or not.
• Pickup and packing — crew, vehicle, packing material and cataloguing. Expect ₹1,500–8,000 depending on volume.
• Retrieval — a per-trip delivery charge inside the city, usually ₹800–1,500.

Prepay 6 months and storage is 10% less; prepay 12 months and it is 20% less.

Why per-item beats per-square-foot

A 50 sq ft self-storage room sounds small but is 400+ cubic feet of air, most of which you cannot stack into. A per-item price means a wardrobe costs the same whether it stands alone or shares a rack with your neighbour’s sofa — and you never pay for empty air. The packed volume of your whole list still matters: above 300 cu ft you get a 5% volume discount, above 600 cu ft 10%.

Five ways to reduce your storage bill

Small decisions before pickup make a real difference to the monthly figure.

• Sell or donate what you will not use in the next year — storing a ₹3,000 table for a year costs more than the table.
• Let the crew disassemble beds, tables and wardrobes: flat-packed furniture takes 30–40% less volume.
• Use uniform cartons; odd-shaped bags waste rack space.
• Store seasonal items only for the season and retrieve them together in one trip.
• Prepay if you know the duration: the 6-month plan is 10% off storage, the 12-month plan 20% off.
